Morton MX

Morton MX is the Cochran County motocross track, a county-run practice track on County Road 74 next to the county park and the Cochran County Airport about two miles east of downtown Morton, Texas, an hour west of Lubbock near the New Mexico line. It is not a commercial race facility: there is no gate, no staff and no schedule. The county lists it as always open, and riders show up during daylight and ride on the honor system.

The rules are simple. A full motocross helmet and proper safety gear are required for everyone on the property. Because the track is natural West Texas dirt on flat ground, it goes from dry to flooded fast; after the heavy rain in early October 2026 the county posted that the track had never flooded like that before and told riders to wait a week. No fees are posted. Riders coming from Lubbock, Levelland or Hobbs will find it a low-key place to put in laps between race weekends at the bigger West Texas tracks.
