Sparse and slow-paced, with a calendar that fits inside the snow-free months. Sioux Valley Cycle Club, Thunder Ridge MX, Central South Dakota Racing Association covering the central tier. Most riders here cross over into eastern Wyoming, western Minnesota, or the North Dakota scene for a fuller calendar. Soil is mostly prairie hardpack with some sandy creek-bottom patches; tracks ride fast and forgive less than loamier states do. Season runs May through September. Wind is the year-round factor and locals plan around it. The Black Hills region in the southwest gives the state a few tracks set against actual elevation. Pro-level events don't reach South Dakota but the local scene takes itself seriously and the regulars at any given track tend to know everyone there. Drives between venues are real; some weekends are four hours each way for a points round, and that's normal here.
