Profile · Hawaii

Riding Hawaii.

Island scene with a lot more dirt than mainland riders expect. Kahuku Motocross Park on Oahu's north shore is the most famous one (it sits on a former Naval auxiliary airfield), Hilo MX runs the Big Island side, Keiki Motocross handles the kid-and-beginner tier, and the Maui MC keeps things moving on Maui. The volcanic soil holds water differently than mainland dirt: faster to drain, quicker to dust, harder on tires than you'd guess looking at it. Trade winds come and go and shift the line riders take through fast sections. There's no winter to plan around; rain patterns matter more than calendar months. Shipping bikes between islands is part of how the racing schedule works, so the rotation is more cooperative than competitive. The pro circuit doesn't reach Hawaii but the local scene runs deep and a number of mainland transplants have ended up here for reasons that should be obvious. Bring extra goggles. The salty air does things to lenses.
