What riders find
Thornwood Motocross is a motocross track in Williamstown, New York, up in Oswego County in the central-northern part of the state, an easy tow from the Syracuse area. It opened for practice in 2006 and is family owned and operated, founded by Jeffrey Hopkinson and his son Adam on the family potato farm. In 2026 it marks its 20th season of holding racing events, which is a real run for a rider-built track.
The main track stretches 1.1 miles over mostly sandy-loam soil, with a layout that has a little of everything: built-up berm and bowl corners, whoops, a split section, and a standout feature the track claims as the state's only under-over tunnel jump. There is also a small 50cc-only practice track so the youngest beginners have a safe place to learn. The facility is set up for real race days, with a 36-rider starting gate, a PA system with FM output, a covered pavilion for the office and sign-up, a bike wash, and an in-ground watering system fed from a pond.
Thornwood runs a full season race series of 24-plus races and ties into the UpState Motocross series and the WNYMA, alongside open practices. For riders across central and northern New York, that sandy-loam dirt and the tunnel-jump layout make it worth the trip. Dates and prep move with the season, so confirm before you haul. See thornwoodmx.com for the practice and race schedule and event details before you load up. For a track built on a working potato farm, the race-day infrastructure is genuinely dialed, a credit to two decades of the Hopkinson family running it.
