Profile

What riders find at Switchback MX.

Switchback MX in Butler is Western Pennsylvania's standout motocross destination, and one of the few U.S. motocross facilities that legitimately operates year-round through professional indoor and outdoor infrastructure. Located on William Flynn Highway about 30 minutes north of Pittsburgh, the 71-acre property combines two outdoor motocross tracks, more than two miles of marked woods trails, and a 47,000 square foot indoor Arenacross facility, the kind of complete operation that lets riders maintain skills and get track time through the long Western PA winter when most outdoor tracks shut down for months. The facility was built and is operated by professional track builder Shane Schaefer, whose work on the layout shows: the outdoor tracks have proper natural-terrain features, technical rhythm sections, and the kind of dirt prep that comes from someone who has built tracks for hire across the country. Two outdoor tracks split riders by skill level. The main outdoor is a national-caliber layout with elevation changes and varied jump sections. The secondary outdoor track is set up for skill development, slightly tighter, with more turns and fewer big-air commitments, ideal for working on cornering technique. Both get groomed and watered before practice days. The 47,000 square foot indoor Arenacross facility is the rare amenity that makes Switchback MX year-round. Built specifically for moto, with proper ventilation, lighting, and a floor sized for legitimate Arenacross-style racing rather than the cramped indoor 'tracks' you sometimes find at fairgrounds. Indoor riding is a critical asset for serious riders living through Pittsburgh winters, and a major draw for visiting riders from Ohio, West Virginia, and northern Pennsylvania. The 2+ miles of woods trails round out the operation for cross-discipline riders. You can run motocross laps in the morning, switch to enduro/woods riding in the afternoon, and finish the day on the indoor Arenacross track if it's getting cold or wet, all on the same property. Practice schedule: Sunday open practice 11am to 4pm at $35 per rider (plus a one-time $15 annual waiver fee). Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday are private rental days, starting around $300 for two hours and scaling up to $600 for four hours. Saturday hosts pit bike race events. Year-round riding 7 days a week with the right combination of practice days and private rentals. Camping is free on-site, which is unusual at this scale of facility, most comparable operations charge $20-35 per night. Concessions are available during events. Restrooms are basic but functional. The location is the operational advantage. From downtown Pittsburgh it's about 30 minutes north on Route 8; from Cleveland, a little over two hours; from Erie, two hours south. The Butler area has plenty of mid-range hotels and chain restaurants for race weekends. For Western PA riders, Switchback MX is the obvious year-round home base. The combination of outdoor + indoor + woods trails + professional track building + free camping + year-round availability is genuinely rare in U.S. motocross.
