Profile

What riders find at Pawnee Cycle Club.

Pawnee Cycle Club, which often races under the Sterling MX name, is a historic natural-terrain motocross track on Colorado Highway 14 outside Sterling, on the state's northeastern plains. Built into natural valley hillsides, it rides like classic outdoor motocross: rolling downhills, hard-charging uphills, and deep natural valleys that test momentum and suspension in a way flat jump-park layouts never do. The loam and dirt mix takes water beautifully, forming long, predictable ruts through the corners, and the layout earned RMXA Track of the Year honors on the strength of that terrain and prep. The obstacles are standard outdoor fare done right: tabletops, step-ups, and sweeping berms that stay challenging for pros while remaining safely shaped for vet and amateur groups. This is an event-weekend venue rather than an everyday track. Public riding runs on periodic double-header weekends organized by MR Race Promotions: Saturday organized practice split into 15-minute rotations by bike size and skill level, then a Sunday race day, with the venue regularly anchoring points rounds for the RMRA regional series. Youth riders get their own turn too, with Stacyc shred sessions on the smaller staging tracks after big-bike practice wraps. Standalone open practice runs $35 per rider, and a dedicated medical transport ambulance is on site during every riding window. Race weekends run a $20 weekend gate (kids 5 and under free), $25 flat overnight camping for the weekend, and race entries at $40 per amateur class, $50 for pro, and $20 for the 50cc track. Skip the sign-in line by pre-registering through the Sterling MX Trackside pre-reg system. Plan to be self-sufficient for the weekend. Wide, open grass and dirt flats handle primitive overnight camping, but there are no RV hookups or running water trackside, so bring generators, extra water barrels, and your pit tools. Portable restrooms sit near the pit lanes, and food trucks or concession vendors are usually brought in for double-header race weekends. For riders in Sterling, Fort Morgan, and along the I-76 corridor, Pawnee is the closest real motocross track, about two hours from Denver and an easy shot from western Nebraska. Event dates post to the Pawnee Cycle Club Facebook group and MR Race Promotions. (970) 521-0574 for club information.
