Cal City MX Park

Cal City MX Park is the High Desert's go-to practice facility, run by John and Inge Elmes since 2005 in the southeastern corner of California City, near Edwards Air Force Base. The operating culture they have built is a big part of why Cal City has stayed busy while other High Desert moto facilities opened and closed around it.

The property runs two tracks. The main track is a 1.3-mile national outdoor style loop, deeply ripped and heavily watered, where the sand, clay, and decomposed granite blend builds flowing berms, deep ruts, and professional-grade tabletops and step-ups. As a session wears on it gets genuinely rough and physical, which is exactly why pro riders use it to train for the demanding national rounds. The Pee Wee track is a fully isolated flat loop where 50cc kids build confidence away from full-size traffic.

Practice runs weekends from 9am to 2pm in season, $40 per rider with 50cc riders at $20, the Pee Wee track at $20, and spectators free on regular practice days. The weekend-only schedule lets the Elmes fully prep the dirt between sessions; show up midweek and you will find an empty property.

Know the season before you drive: the park closes for the summer during the hottest months, when high-desert afternoons regularly clear 100 degrees, and reopens in the fall. Exact opening and closing dates post to the Cal City MX Park Instagram and Facebook. In the shoulder months, hours sometimes shift earlier to beat the heat.

The details are what riders remember. Overnight primitive camping in the enormous flat lot is free, water fill-ups run $5 during the day, and on race weekends there is tri-tip on the BBQ. Public restrooms and spectator viewing areas round out the amenities.

Cal City serves Antelope Valley locals, LA basin weekend traffic up Highway 14, and Inland Empire riders making the two-hour trip for the sand. When it is open, it is worth the drive.
