Profile

What riders find at Cahuilla Creek Motocross.

Cahuilla Creek Motocross in Anza, California sits in the high country off Highway 371 in Riverside County's mountain belt, about 90 minutes east of San Diego, two hours from Los Angeles, and 45 minutes south of Palm Springs. The property is at roughly 4,000 feet of elevation, a fact that defines almost everything about how the track rides and when it rides best. Summer high temperatures average 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the Inland Empire below, which means Cahuilla Creek is the SoCal track of record when Perris, Glen Helen, and the rest of the valley facilities shut down because of summer heat. The dirt is the main draw. Cahuilla Creek is known for the loamiest soil in Southern California, the kind of grippy, deep, moist surface that East Coast riders fly out to ride because nothing else in the western U.S. delivers the same feel. Loam and sand mixed across natural high-country terrain gives the track real grip without the sandblown washouts of low-elevation desert layouts. Three tracks split the property. The Main Track is a one-mile loop with genuine elevation gains and downhill straights, the kind of terrain you cannot get at the Inland Empire's flatter parcels. The Vet Track is a shorter, more forgiving loop for older riders. The PeeWee Track serves 50cc and 65cc kid bikes. The Main and Vet tracks both work in the natural contours of the property rather than being bulldozed flat, so riders get real grade changes, off-camber sections, and the kind of layout variety that builds a more complete skill set. Open practice runs Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The flat $20 per rider day rate is among the lowest in California, and the gate-keeper-light atmosphere keeps the vibe relaxed. Race weekends bring out NGMX and AHRMA fields for amateur racing and vintage motocross, and the elevation makes Cahuilla a popular pre-season training spot for racers heading to Loretta Lynn's, the World Vet, or Pro Nationals in cooler climates. The drive in is its own experience. Highway 371 winds through the Cahuilla Mountains with sweeping turns and pine-shaded grades, and the run from the 15 freeway at Temecula climbs from 1,500 feet to over 4,000 feet in about 45 minutes. Tow-rig drivers should plan for the grade. Camping on the property is allowed, with primitive sites and basic facilities. Pala Casino and the Temecula wine country sit at the bottom of the hill if a family wants overnight options beyond camping. For anyone searching for motocross tracks in Anza, Riverside County MX, or the loamiest dirt in Southern California, Cahuilla Creek is the answer. The combination of elevation, soil, and laid-back operating culture is rare in California motocross, and the track has stayed in the top tier of SoCal practice venues for decades.
