Cycle World USA opened on July 18, 1976, built by regional motocross icon Ed Schultz on 40 acres in St. Peters, and it put Missouri on the national map the very first day: the opening event was an AMA 500cc National, won by Dutch legend Pierre Karsmakers on a factory Honda. The venue held AMA Pro Motocross Nationals from 1976 through 1978 and hosted fall Trans-AMA rounds that brought Roger DeCoster, Gerrit Wolsink, and Marty Smith to Missouri soil. Between the marquee dates, Schultz ran local races every two weeks, and the track became the proving ground for a generation of Midwest racers like Craig Mueller, Jay Clark, and Pat Hagarty.
