Oak Ridge MX

Oak Ridge MX sits on 60 hilly acres of Tama County farmland outside Garwin, Iowa, about 20 minutes east of Marshalltown. Owner Jon Kriegel started dreaming it up in 2011, fought through the permit process and broke ground in July 2013, and the place was built by family, friends and a long list of volunteers rather than a contractor. Three tracks share the property: a full-size main track that rolls over the hills and handles everything from 50s to 450s, a North Track for the 50cc shaft-drive and beginner classes, and two small pit bike tracks, including an all-new pit bike track for 2026. The main track is lit for evening programs and runs transponder timing on race days.

This is an event track rather than a daily practice facility. Oak Ridge opens for its posted race weekends and festivals, and on those Saturdays it runs open practice from 9 AM to 3 PM in groups split by class and ability, $30 to $35 per class, with an AMA card required to ride. Gates open Friday afternoon so families can move in and camp; camping is free on IowaMoto race weekends and $10 a rig at the festivals. Gate fees run $30 Friday, $20 Saturday and $15 Sunday on the big weekends with kids 3 and under free, pit vehicles need a $10 pass and an 18-plus driver, and the AMA's both-parents minor release rule is enforced. Open practice days run full prep with flaggers and medical staff on site, and there is potable water for filling campers plus power-washing water for bikes.

The calendar is the reason riders know the name. Oak Ridge has hosted Loretta Lynn qualifiers, AMA featured events, pro-ams like Best of the Midwest, the Evergood Open and Vurb Classics, and has drawn Jason Anderson, Josh Hansen, Jeff Emig, Dean Wilson and Christian Craig through the gate. Its own signature weekend is the Rumble at Oak Ridge, 13 seasons running, a fall motocross festival with two-moto racing, a holeshot challenge under the lights, pit bike straight rhythm, Stacyc and e-bike races, a hayride and awards from FMF, 100 Percent, Bell and Motosport. In October 2026 it also hosts the Red Bull Barn Find Open, Carson Brown's celebration of barn-find and vintage bikes, and the Iron Mule GP takes the main track out through the timber, creek crossings and a tire pit. Riders come from Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Waterloo and across the Midwest, and the crew asks everyone to route in on Hwy T47 to 280th Street.
