Frequently Asked
Colorado motocross questions.
What's motocross like in Colorado? +
Altitude is the variable nobody warns you about until your second moto when the carb (or your lungs) lets you know. IMI Motorsports Complex up in Dacono, Aztec Family Raceway in Berthoud, Honor Farm down in Pueblo. Most Front Range tracks live around 5,000 feet and a few western-slope spots push higher. The bike loses power, you lose breath, and lap times sag if you don't pace yourself. Season is shorter than southerners assume: late April through mid-October on the Front Range, narrower in the high country. Snowmelt makes spring tacky and forgiving; July and August add afternoon thunderstorms that can stop a race weekend in an hour. Soil varies wildly by track because of the geology. Granite chunks at one venue, hardpack at the next. The Mountain States series runs through here, and you'll see Wyoming and Nebraska riders on the gate alongside locals. Carry rain gear in a saddle bag from June onward and don't trust the forecast past noon.
