Richard Bong State Recreation Area

Richard Bong State Recreation Area is a 4,500-acre Wisconsin state recreation area in Kansasville, and the off-highway side of the operation runs three dirt loops with 8 miles of off-highway-motorcycle trails plus 6.4 miles of shared ATV/UTV trails. For local southeast Wisconsin riders, the property is the closest state-managed OHM facility within a reasonable drive.

The mixed terrain, prairies, wetlands, and forest, gives the trail network real visual variety, this is scenic riding country, not just utility dirt. The state recreation area designation means the property carries broader amenities than a private track: picnic areas, swimming, fishing, hiking, the whole multi-use state park footprint that families can use on the same day as a riding session.

Operating hours and seasonal access are worth understanding before driving. Loops 1 and 2 open 9am to sunset for most of the year. October through early January, hours shift to 2pm to sunset during pheasant hunting season (the public hunting overlap is real, plan around it). The OHM facility closes for most of March and April for trail maintenance and seasonal recovery.

For local riders in Kenosha County, Racine County, and the broader southeast Wisconsin region, Richard Bong is the dedicated state-managed riding destination. Milwaukee riders make the trip south for the trail variety. Chicago metro riders also use the property for cross-state access to legal OHM terrain.

The property is southwest of Kansasville in Kenosha County, accessible from I-94 corridor traffic. Operating status has shifted in recent seasons, check the DNR site for current OHM access before driving.
