Profile

What riders find at Sunset Ridge MX.

Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut, Illinois is one of the most respected amateur motocross facilities in the Midwest, a family-owned operation that has been turning the same north-central Illinois farmland dirt for more than 25 years. The property has built its reputation as a true qualifier-grade amateur venue, hosting both the AMA Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Qualifier and the NMA Ponca City Qualifier, two of the most consequential races in U.S. amateur motocross. A solid finish at Sunset Ridge can be the gateway to the largest amateur national in the world at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Tennessee, and the property has produced generations of riders who first qualified there. The main track is a 1.6-mile layout, long by Midwest standards, that combines the natural rolling terrain of north-central Illinois farmland with professionally designed man-made obstacles. The result is one of the most technically interesting amateur layouts in the region, with the kind of jump combinations, rhythm sections, and elevation changes that prepare racers for the demands of the national-level amateur calendar. The soil is the typical north-central Illinois farmland mix that sets up firm in the morning, develops tacky lines through the day, and holds prep through long race weekends. A dedicated pee-wee track serves the youngest riders separately, so 50cc and 65cc kids can build skills without competing for line choice with the full-size bikes. The Sunset Ridge Motocross School operates on the property and has trained generations of Midwest racers. The school's continuity is part of what defines the place. The coaches who taught a generation of parents are still on staff teaching the kids of those same parents, and the multi-generational culture shows up in the way the property runs on race weekends. The race calendar pulls riders from across the upper Midwest. Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, and Minnesota racers make the trip for qualifier weekends, and the rounds of the Illini Super Series fill the regional calendar with state-level points racing. Camping is available on the property for race weekends. Access is straightforward. Walnut sits in Bureau County in north-central Illinois, about 90 minutes west of downtown Chicago via Interstate 80 and 90 minutes north of the Quad Cities. Peoria is about an hour south. The I-80 location makes Sunset Ridge within day-trip range of the entire Chicago metro and within weekend range of riders from across the upper Midwest. The track phone is (815) 379-9534 for current schedule and event registration. For anyone searching for motocross tracks in Illinois, Loretta Lynn's qualifiers in the Midwest, or a serious amateur development program within a short drive of Chicago, Sunset Ridge MX is the answer most coaches give first. The combination of qualifier status, technical track, on-site school, and family-owned continuity has kept the property in the top tier of Midwest amateur facilities for a quarter century.
