Profile

What riders find at Sandia Motocross.

Sandia Motocross has been running in Albuquerque since 2004. That puts it in the same era as most of the New Mexico motocross facilities, but its operating continuity through more than two decades makes it one of the longest-running tracks in the state. The property has built its reputation on long, fast, sand-based tracks suited to the New Mexico desert. The dirt is sand-heavy. New Mexico sand rides differently than the deep beach sand of Southwick or the soft sand of LACR. Albuquerque's mix is closer to high-desert sand, with grit and granular structure that holds prep through long sessions better than the loose beach equivalent. The result is a layout that rewards riders who can read sand without forcing the kind of forearm pump that destroys lap pace on softer surfaces. Two main tracks anchor the operation. Both are long and fast, the layout style that New Mexico's open terrain supports better than tight tree-lined Northeast tracks. A mini track sits separately for beginners and 50cc / 65cc kids. The three-track structure is the standard family-friendly arrangement, and it lets households with mixed-skill riders practice the same property at the same time. Safety gear is enforced. Full helmet, goggles, boots, and gloves are required. The enforcement reflects the property's operating culture, which leans toward serious-rider rather than casual-weekend. The kind of place that turns away riders without proper gear is the kind of place that takes practice seriously. The schedule is built around the New Mexico climate. Wednesdays from 4pm to dark, Fridays and Saturdays from 2pm to 6pm, Sundays from 11am to 3pm. The Wednesday afternoon and weekend rhythm gives serious local racers consistent access without the high-desert heat that makes midday riding miserable in summer. Pricing is $20 for non-members and $15 for members. Primitive camping is available on the property for riders who want to log multi-day sessions. The Albuquerque location puts Sandia within day-trip range of most of New Mexico's population. Santa Fe is about an hour north on Interstate 25. Las Cruces is three and a half hours south. El Paso, Texas is four hours south. Colorado Springs is roughly five hours north for visiting weekend riders. The property serves the Albuquerque metro as its core market and pulls trailing weekend traffic from the broader Four Corners region. For New Mexico riders, Sandia Motocross is the default Albuquerque-area home track. Two decades of operating continuity in a state where motocross facilities have not been common is a quiet but real accomplishment.
