The Barnyard MX

The Barnyard MX is a grassroots motocross track outside Mount Vernon in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, run by Dustin and Janie Barnett on their own farm. It started as a neighbourhood track and has grown into a proper riding facility without losing the community feel that made it worth riding in the first place.

The main track has a reputation among local riders for being genuinely technical rather than just fast, and the Barnetts prep it hard before a ride day. Riders talk about the dirt as chocolatey when it is right, which is the whole point of calling ride days on soil moisture rather than a fixed calendar.

The property has expanded beyond the main layout. There is a dedicated kids track, plus two woods options: a short loop and a longer 7 mile loop for anyone who would rather ride trail and enduro than laps. That mix makes it an easy one to bring a mixed-ability family to.

Open practice is BIKES ONLY, no quads, unless the track says otherwise for a specific day. Entry is a $25 cash donation per rider, and every rider must sign the online rider waiver before going out. The Barnyard runs it through a QR code rather than paper at the gate, so scan it before you leave home.

The important thing to understand is the schedule. There is no fixed weekly calendar. Ride days get called a few days in advance depending on how the ground is holding moisture and what the weekend weather is doing, and a typical day runs 10 AM to 4 PM. Everything is posted to The Barnyard MX Facebook page, and Dustin posts updates from his own profile too, so follow both if you want the earliest notice.

Camping is available on the property, so it works as a weekend rather than a day trip.

Mount Vernon sits on I-75 between Berea and London, which puts The Barnyard within easy reach of Lexington, Richmond, Somerset and the wider southeastern Kentucky riding community.
