Central Cycle Club

Central Cycle Club has been throwing motos in the same eastern Connecticut town since 1967. That puts it in rare company. Most American motocross facilities have come and gone in 60 years, and the ones still running tend to have changed hands, changed names, and changed dirt at least once. Central Village's club has done none of those. Same property, same club model, same loamy dark soil under the start gate every Sunday from spring through fall.

The concrete starting pad is the giveaway. You do not pour concrete behind a row of gates unless you intend to be there a while, and Central Cycle Club poured theirs decades ago. It is the small detail that tells visiting riders this is not a casual operation. The first 100 feet of every moto launch off real grip rather than the loose dirt that some regional tracks tolerate.

The main loop is fast and smooth. Connecticut soil shifts through a session the way mid-Atlantic clay-loam shifts everywhere, hard to predict in the morning, tacky by noon, rutted by the time the afternoon classes finish. The grooming staff has been working that exact equation for half a century, and the track responds.

A separate peewee track sits off the main facility for the 50cc and 65cc kids. The arrangement is standard at any serious family-friendly facility, and it is one of the reasons Central Cycle Club draws households with multiple riders. Younger riders learn at their pace without the pressure of full-size traffic.

The racing calendar runs through NESC, the New England Sports Committee, one of the longest-running amateur racing organizations in the Northeast. NESC sanctioning means a Central Cycle Club race counts for points the same as a NESC race anywhere else in the region. Vintage racing fills out the parallel calendar for pre-modern bikes, and the vintage crowd at Central Cycle Club tends to be the same families who have been there for decades. The kids who learned to race at the club in the 70s now bring their grandkids.

Membership is preferred for regular access, which reflects the club's operating culture. Members ride throughout the season; non-members can ride select open practice days weather permitting. The 1967 founding model still defines how the place works.

Eastern Connecticut puts the club roughly 45 minutes from Hartford, 30 minutes from Providence, and 90 minutes from Boston. It is not the most-traveled motocross facility in New England, but it might be the most committed. Six decades of continuous operation in this part of the country is a story in itself.
