Profile

What riders find at Little Gem Cycle Park.

Little Gem Cycle Park, also known as the Sand Hollow OHV area, is a sprawling 2,000-acre public riding zone on Sand Hollow Road just east of Emmett, about 20 miles northwest of Boise, and one of the largest off-road vehicle parks in the western United States. The land runs under a partnership of private landholders, the BLM, and Idaho Parks and Recreation. Rather than one manicured circuit, Little Gem is a giant natural playground: terrain jumps, steep ridges, technical hill climbs, and dry sandy washes, with a dedicated natural-terrain motocross section where local riders drill turns and jump sequences in loose valley sand. Timing matters here: the silica-sand and clay composition packs down beautifully after rain and soaks up winter moisture without swamping, making it one of the Treasure Valley's premier winter and early-spring spots, while high summer rides hot, blown out, and dusty. Entry is completely free with no gate or parking fees outside occasional hosted race events. The paperwork is Idaho's ORV rule: every bike and quad must display a current Idaho ORV sticker, with a $30 temporary pass available online for non-residents. The property is strictly day-use, dawn to dusk: no camping, overnight parking, open fires, or fireworks (the East 10th Street RV Park in Emmett is the nearest camp). And this is working land: cattle graze freely from winter through June, so slow to walking speed around livestock and never park near the water troughs. The multi-use area also draws hikers, archers, horseback riders, and winter sledders, so expect company beyond the moto crowd. Full rules at littlegemcyclepark.com/park-rules. For Emmett locals it is the backyard spot, and Boise, Eagle, and Star riders slip over Freezeout Hill for a free half-day of sand and hills. (208) 365-4611 for park information.
