What riders find
Sand Mountain Recreation Area is a Bureau of Land Management dune riding complex 25 miles southeast of Fallon, Nevada. The 4,795-acre footprint centers on a roughly 600-foot main dune that's the property's defining feature, sustained jumps and technical sand riding on terrain that's actually rare in the western U.S. interior.
Annual visitor traffic runs 50,000 to 70,000, which makes Sand Mountain one of the busier BLM dune areas in northern Nevada. Pricing is $40 for a 1-7 day pass or $90 for an annual pass, but the property is FREE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which is a real cost factor for local riders running weekday sessions.
The sand dune surface is the property's primary draw. The 600-foot main dune supports sustained jumping, hill climbing, and technical sand-specific riding that flat-terrain motocross practice can't replicate. Cross-discipline riders use the property for sand-specific training between conventional track sessions.
Facilities are basic. Primitive camping is permitted, vault toilets only. The property runs year-round, which gives local Fallon, Fernley, Carson City, and Reno area riders weekday and weekend access through most of the calendar.
For local northern Nevada riders, Sand Mountain is the closest serious dune destination. Reno riders make the run east on I-80. Fallon and Churchill County riders treat the property as a home base. The free Tuesday/Wednesday access window is particularly valuable for retirees, shift workers, and self-employed riders with flexible schedules.
